Present Value Calculator
See What a Future Amount Is Worth Today — or What Money Today Grows To.
About the Present Value Calculator
Use our Present Value Calculator to find what an amount you’ll receive in the future is worth today — or, in reverse, what money you have today grows to. Enter any three of present value, future value, interest rate and time, and it finds the fourth.
The calculation discounts the future amount at an annual rate compounded yearly, every six months, quarterly, monthly, weekly or daily. For example, $10,000 due in 10 years is worth $5,496.33 today at 6% compounded monthly — 120 periods of 0.5%, a discount factor of 0.549633. In reverse, $1,000 at 5% compounded yearly grows to $1,276.28 in 5 years. Working back from a total that already includes interest — a reverse interest calculation — is the same thing: $400,000 due in 5 years at 5% compounded yearly is $313,410.47 today.
To find the interest rate you’d need, enter both values: growing $1,000 to $2,000 in 10 years, compounded monthly, takes 6.96% a year. For the time, enter the rate: at 6% compounded monthly, $1,000 reaches $2,000 after 11 years 7 months. The results also show the rate per period, the number of periods and a year-by-year table.
The rate stays the same, nothing is added or taken out, and fees, taxes and inflation aren’t included, so treat the results as an estimate. To grow a value at a steady yearly rate, including a falling one, use our Equity Growth Calculator; to add money regularly, our Compound Interest Calculator with Contributions.
