See What Your Daily Habit Really Costs.
About the Coffee Spending Calculator
Use our Coffee Spending Calculator to see what a small daily habit really costs — a latte, lunch out, a delivery, an energy drink — per week, per month and per year, and what it adds up to over the years.
Enter what you pay each time and how often you buy it: every day, on weekdays or a set number of times a week. A year is counted as 52 weeks, so the cost a month is the cost × times a week × 52 ÷ 12. For example, a $5.50 latte on weekdays comes to $119.17 a month, $1,430 a year, or $14,300 over ten years.
This is often called the latte factor: add an expected return to see what the same money could grow to if you invested it instead, at the end of each month — that latte money invested at 7% for ten years grows to about $20,626, $6,326 more than you’d spend. Add a cut back to see what buying it less often would save: a $4 daily energy drink cut to three times a week saves $69.33 a month, or about $12,001 invested at 7% over ten years.
The point is awareness, not giving up everything you enjoy: keep the habits that are worth it to you and redirect the ones you wouldn’t miss; treat the results as an estimate.
