Budget Percent Calculator

See How Far You Came In Under or Over Budget.

Use our Budget Percent Calculator to see how far your spending came in under or over budget — for a household, a project or a department — and to work out budget changes in percent.

The budget variance is the planned budget minus what you actually spent, as a percentage of the plan. A positive variance means you spent less than planned; a negative one means you went over. You can also work backwards to the planned budget or the actual amount from a variance.

For budget changes, find the new budget after a percentage increase or cut, the current budget before it, or the % change between two budgets. The results show the difference in dollars as well as in percent.

Some organisations measure variance with the opposite sign, so check which one your report uses, and treat the results as an estimate. To plan a monthly budget, use our Monthly Budget Calculator; to see what share of your spending each expense takes, our Expense Percentage Calculator.
