About the Cost Per kWh Calculator
Use our Cost Per kWh Calculator to find what you pay for each kilowatt-hour of electricity, what an appliance costs to run, and what your rate really is once delivery, fixed charges and taxes are added.
Your cost per kWh is the bill divided by the energy used: a $112 bill for 500 kWh works out to $0.224 per kWh, or 22.4¢. You can also turn it around — at 12.88¢ a kWh, 1,000 kWh costs $128.80 — or find how many kWh a bill buys.
For an appliance, energy is its power in kilowatts times the hours it runs. A 1,500 W space heater used 5 hours a day uses 7.5 kWh, so at $0.13 a kWh it costs $0.98 a day and about $29.66 a month — $355.88 over a 365-day year. Enter the hours it actually draws power: a fridge or an air conditioner cycles on and off.
A bill often has a supply rate, a delivery rate, a fixed monthly charge and taxes. With 900 kWh at $0.09 supply and $0.045 delivery, a $12 fixed charge and 6% tax, the bill is $141.51 — an all-in 15.72¢ per kWh, 6.72¢ more than the supply rate alone. Rates, tiers and time-of-use pricing vary, so treat the results as an estimate. To see what a rate change does to your bill, use our Utility Rate Increase Calculator; to add up all your household bills, our Utilities Cost Per Month Calculator.
