Debt Burden Ratio Calculator

See Your Debts the Way Lenders Do.

Use our Debt Burden Ratio Calculator to see how much of your income goes to paying debts — the way lenders see it. Your debt burden ratio is all your monthly debt payments (mortgage or rent, car loans, student loans, credit card minimums and other loans) as a share of your gross monthly income.

A common guideline is to keep it at or below 36%; 43% is the usual maximum for a qualified mortgage, and some lenders go up to 50%.

Enter your income and debts to see your ratio and your housing ratio, or turn it around: find the most you could pay toward debts at a limit and how much room you have left, or the income you’d need for your current debts. Income can be entered per month, per year, per paycheck, per week or per hour. To look at your car payment on its own, use our Payment-to-Income Ratio Calculator; to plan a student loan, one of the debts counted here, our Student Loan Repayment Calculator. To check your housing and debt payments against the 28% and 36% guides alongside all your spending, try our Personal Cash Flow Analysis Calculator.
