About the Reverse Inflation Calculator
Use our Reverse Inflation Calculator to work out what something cost before prices rose — starting from today’s price — what an old price comes to today, or how much prices rose between two prices.
Enter the inflation as a total change over the whole period, or as a yearly rate over a number of years — the calculator compounds it for you. A price of $120 after a 20% rise was $100.00 before it. At 3% a year, something that costs $100 today cost $74.41 ten years ago — a 34.39% rise in all — and the results show the price year by year.
Choose Inflation to find the change between two prices: $80 to $92 is a 15% rise, and $3.00 to $4.50 over 15 years averages 2.74% a year. The results also show how much less a dollar buys after the rise — 16.67% less after a 20% rise — and work for falling prices too.
One average rate stands in for prices that change from year to year, and a single item may not follow general inflation, so treat the results as an estimate.
