Room Rent Calculator
Split the Rent Fairly by Room Size.
About the Room Rent Calculator
Use our Room Rent Calculator to split the rent between rooms by their size, so a bigger bedroom pays more than a small one, with room for extras like a private bathroom and for the space everyone shares.
Enter the total monthly rent and each room’s size, in square feet or square metres. Each room’s rent is the rent × its size ÷ the total size, rounded to the cent so the rooms add up exactly to the rent. For example, with $2,400 rent, a 300 ft² room out of 1,200 ft² pays $600 a month and the 900 ft² room $1,800.
A premium adds a set amount for a room with something extra — an ensuite, a balcony, a parking space — and comes off the top before the rest is split. Enter a share for common space to split that part evenly, since everyone uses the kitchen and living room the same: with 25% shared, $2,400 and rooms of 150, 200 and 250 ft² pay $650, $800 and $950. Utilities, if you add them, are split evenly too.
Agree on how to measure the rooms before you start, and treat the results as an estimate. To split the rent by what each person earns instead, use our Split Rent By Income Calculator; to fit your share into your spending, our Monthly Budget Calculator. If someone moves in or out partway through the month, our Prorate Bill Calculator works out their share of that month’s rent.
